What is the Bahá'í Glossary?

The Bahá'í vocabulary has many Arabic and Persian words that may be unfamiliar to non-native speakers and newcomers to the Bahá'í Faith. This glossary is designed to help Bahá'ís learn to pronounce these words according to the pronunciation guide established and promoted by Shoghí Effendí.

ميرزا عباس
Title: Mírzá `Abbás-i-Núrí

The Father of Bahá’u’lláh. Mírzá Buzurg was the title given to Mírzá `Abbás-i-Núrí by the Sháh in recognition of his considerable ability as a calligrapher. Mírzá Buzug was a high ranking figure in the Persian government, serving as a vizier and then a governor. Under the Prime Minister Hájí Mírzá Áqásí, Mírzá Buzurg lost his position and much of his wealth. Though he was aware that his son was destined for great things, Bahá’u’lláh's station and destiny were most certainly veiled from him. Mírzá Buzurg passed away in 1839.
