Mecca was the birthplace of Muhammad and one of the cities He conquered late in His life. Muhammad declared the city the holiest site in Islám and forbade non-Muslims from entering the city to protect it from the influences of polytheism. The Báb, Quddús and the Báb's Ethiopian servant went on pilgrimage to Mecca and Medina in October of 1844. The majority of their journey to Mecca was by sea and the difficult voyage took two months. As a result of that voyage, the Báb supplicated God to improve sea travel and make it more pleasant.
