What is the Bahá'í Glossary?

كربلاء‎
City: Karbila, Iraq

Karbilá is a city in Iráq located approximately 60 miles (100 km) southwest of Baghdád. The city has marked significance in early Bahá'í history. It was the residence of both Shaykh Ahmad and Siyyid Kázim, and it was here that, according to The Dawn Breakers, Siyyid Kázim met and recognized the Báb. When in Shíráz, the Báb instructed Letter of the Living Mullá 'Alíy-i-Bastámí to go to Karbilá and proclaim the new Message. Táhirih, as well, spent time in the city teaching the new Cause. Karbilá was also Bahá'u'lláh's first place of exile prior to being invited back to Tihrán in 1852.
