Isfáhán is both a province in the central region of Írán and the capital city of that province. It was one of the first places Mullá Husayn proclaimed the Bábí Cause, and the city was the residence of the Báb for four months in late 1848. For the majority of the time that the Báb lived in Isfáhán, He lived under the protection and in the house of the governor of the province, Manúchihr Khán. The governor proclaimed his faith in the Báb, but died shortly thereafter.
Earlier in its history, Isfáhán was an important point on a major trans-Asia trade route. At it's height it was a center for commerce and enjoyed the economic and cross-cultural benefits associated with such extensive trading activity. In 1868, its population is estimated to have been approximately 60,000.
