Language of Origin: Arabic

Accepted Pronunciation

One who follows Bahá'u'lláh and is a believer in the Bahá'í Faith. Alternately it is used as an adjective to describe that which pertains to the revelation of Bahá'u'lláh (i.e. Bahá'í law). The root, Bahá, is translated as 'Glory' or 'Splendor'. In the Islamic tradition, the Greatest Name of God is hidden. Baha'u'llah revealed it to be Bahá. Bahá'í, then, is literally translated as ‘of the Glory’ or ‘of the Splendor’. Followers of Baha’u’llah began to be referred to as Bahá'ís during the time that Bahá'u'lláh was in Edirne (1864-1868). Prior to that, the followers of Bahá'u'lláh were still referred to as Bábí’s.
