Language of Origin:
A follower of The Báb. Unlike other Islamic messianic movements, the Bábí movement signaled a break with Islám and is considered by Bahá’ís to be a separate, independent religion from Islám. The Bábí movement was violently opposed by the government of Írán, particularly after three radical Bábís attempted to assassinate Násiri’d-Dín Sháh in 1852. Thousands of Bábís were put to death in the ensuing violence. Bahá’ís view the Bábí Faith as a distinct religious dispensation and the necessary predecessor to the Bahá’í Faith.
