(Also Akko or Acre) An ancient port that was, in the time of Bahá’u’lláh, a desolate prison-city where enemies of the Ottoman Empire were sent. Bahá’u’lláh was banished to ‘Akká in 1868 and arrived there on August 31st of that year. He was given permission to leave the city by the city’s governor in 1876 but refused, insisting that he was a prisoner. Only after ‘Akká’s legal counsel begged Bahá’u’lláh to leave for an hour did He consent to do so. Bahá’u’lláh left the city in June of 1877.
